American Royals by Katharine Mcgee

3.5 out of 5 stars

Summary: After the Revolutionary War was won by America, General George Washington was crowned king of the United States. Over 200 years later there is still a monarchy in America and Princess Beatrice is expected to take over the throne after her father.

As time is ticking before taking over she begins to grow restless and claustrophobic by the thought of becoming queen.

Beatrice’s younger sister, Samantha, does not care about much. She’s known as the spare and since she is not first in line no one cares what she does either which leads to her acting up on many occasions. She begins to form feelings for the one boy she cannot have. And then there is Samantha’s twin, Jefferson. America loves him as well as the two girls fighting for his love.

Opinions (no spoilers): I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun, easy read and every time I picked it up I was engulfed in the story and did not want to put the book down. The characters are close to my age, most college students or just about to go to college, so I easily related to them and could understand the transitions they were going through.

I really felt for all the characters (besides Daphne) and whenever something would happen to them I would feel it as if it happened to me. Usually that many POV’s confuses me but I was able to follow them and follow the plot. I read THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR by Katharine Mcgee immediately following AMERICAN ROYALS and both books give off the same vibes and both were drama packed stories.

One of my issues with this story was that it was extremely similar to her other novel. She did not seem to evolve much as a writer with AMERICAN ROYALS and her characters seemed very similar to the characters in THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR.

I really enjoyed Katharine Mcgee’s writing and it was fun. She really knows how to intertwine characters and transition all the stories together. The story moved quickly and I was rarely bored while reading it.

I recommend this story to anyone that’s looking for a light read that is entertaining from the first page.

Spoilers: The ending left at such a cliffhanger I don’t even know how to react after reading it. I need the second book in my hands right now. I felt bad for Beatrice because even though she didn’t cause her father’s death she may still feel responsible for it. Her relationship with Connor was so real and I really hope in this next book we see more of them and in the end they end up together because their relationship is so sweet.

All of the couples in the book ended on not so good terms so we don’t know where any of them stand right now.

Nina and Jeff got into a fight and broke up and that was not resolved. I really loved them together. Their relationship was easy until everyone found out about them (thanks to Daphne) so hopefully they can figure something out.

Daphne and Ethan’s relationship was quite unexpected but after all that Daphne has done I don’t believe she deserves Ethan.

I am very excited for the next book and for all the drama that will come with it!
